Better roads
Roads are the lifelines of our vastly connected region, whether you’re using our roads for work, recreation or accessing important services like health or education.
Our region includes a large selection of federal, state and local roads. While our council is not primarily responsible for nation and state roads, we play an important role making sure the state government are aware of issues in our region. After the 2020-2022 La Nina wet weather events our roads have been left in a terrible condition.
Council and our state government have been working hard to repair the damage. With almost one quarter of the SDRC budget being spent on roads its clearly an important part of our responsibilities. Although time and time again our roads can be found in a poor condition for extended periods of time while we await outsourced labour to make these repairs.
As a representative of this region, I will champion:
- Increasing the number of employees on road crews specifically dedicated to more technical road repairs and construction.
- Better empowering council staff to respond to roads in poor repair.
- Improved transparency and a link between reporting damage and planning for its repair.
- Improve liveability by encouraging alternate means of travel, especially in our towns.
- Identify and plan for road improvements in growing towns and villages.
